How AI Changes Industrial Emission Tracking
By Nishanth Kumar Sirivolu · Co-Founder, CarbonMeter
Continuous measurement produces more data than any team can read. A single site with a hundred monitored assets generates hundreds of thousands of readings a day. The value of AI in emission tracking is not that it makes the numbers — measurement does that — but that it makes the numbers actionable.
Baselines per asset, not per site
Machine-learning models learn what normal looks like for each individual asset: its typical load profile by hour and day, its startup signature, its idle draw. Site-level monitoring averages all of this away; asset-level baselines mean a single misbehaving machine stands out even when the site total looks unremarkable.
The anomalies that matter
- Out-of-hours consumption — equipment left running when nothing is scheduled. Across the sites CarbonMeter has measured to date, 12–22% of electricity was consumed outside operating hours.
- Baseload drift — the site's overnight floor creeping upward month on month, a signature of accumulating small faults.
- Demand spikes — abnormal peaks that inflate capacity charges and often indicate mechanical problems.
- Abnormal cycling — compressors or refrigeration short-cycling, an early warning of failure and an energy drain.
From dashboard to conversation
The other change is interface. Natural-language assistants let an operations manager ask 'which machines drove last month's increase?' and get an answer grounded in the site's own data, with the underlying readings available for inspection. The point is not novelty — it is that insight stops depending on someone having time to build the right chart.
What AI does not replace
None of this works on estimated data. A model cannot detect an anomaly in a number that was interpolated from a monthly bill, and a recommendation is only as trustworthy as the reading behind it. AI is a multiplier on measurement — which is why we build the measurement first.
Measure, don't estimate
CarbonMeter turns asset-level energy measurement into carbon accounting and compliance reporting, from £500/month.
